If you have no transport and the forecast is strong, walk to the riverbank behind the Arktikum museum, where the Ounasjoki opens a wide, dark northern horizon, or take the road up Ounasvaara hill, whose top and eastern slopes face away from the town's lights. Give your eyes twenty minutes to adapt and keep your phone screen off. On a weak or moderate night neither will show much; on a strong night both are worth the walk.

How to hunt on your own
- Get away from sodium streetlights. Fifteen kilometres is usually enough; thirty is better.
- Find a frozen lake or open field facing north. The aurora hangs in the northern half of the sky on most nights; a wall of spruce to the north hides it.
- Check cloud before Kp. A Kp of 2 under clear sky beats a Kp of 5 under stratus. Use the cloud map and Kp on our live data page.
- Arrive early and wait. Displays typically peak around midnight, plus or minus two hours, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Give your eyes twenty minutes in the dark.
- Drive for winter. Winter tyres are mandatory in winter conditions in Finland, forest roads are icy, and a breakdown at −25 °C is dangerous. Keep the tank full, tell someone your plan, and carry the right clothing.
When a guided chase beats doing it yourself
