What Is the Best Northern Lights Tour in Rovaniemi? How to Choose

A neutral buyer's guide to Northern Lights tours from Rovaniemi: hunt or fixed spot, distance, group size, the exact refund rule, hours, photos, pickup and price, ten questions to ask any operator, and which of our three tours fits you.

Tour group with lanterns under green Northern Lights on a December night near Rovaniemi

Short answer: the best Northern Lights tour in Rovaniemi is the one that will drive to clear sky, runs through the hours around midnight and states in writing exactly what triggers a refund. Check distance, group size, the refund rule and cancellation first, and compare prices last.

There is no single best tour for everyone. This guide gives you the checks that work for any operator, then says honestly which of our three tours fits you, and when another kind of tour is the better buy.

Which Northern Lights tour is best for you?

The best tour depends mostly on your budget, your group and how many nights you have, so start from who you are rather than from a ranking.

On a budget or travelling soloA large-group hunt with a money-back ruleThe cheapest way to reach clear sky

Aurora hunt or fixed-spot tour: what is the difference?

A hunt has no fixed destination and drives to wherever the sky is clear; a fixed-spot tour takes you to one site, and you see the lights only if the sky above that site is clear and the aurora is active.

Fixed-spot evenings include aurora camps, campfire dinners and snowmobile or reindeer rides. They are shorter and warmer, often include food, and suit a clear forecast or an evening that is the point in itself. Most do not refund you if the sky stays cloudy.

A hunt suits you when the aurora is the goal. The aurora forecast of NOAA, the US space weather service, looks only 30 to 90 minutes ahead, so the best place is often decided on the road.

How far will the tour drive, and who decides where?

Ask for the maximum distance or time and who chooses the direction, because a hunt is only as good as its willingness to leave the cloud behind.

In autumn 2026 listings, promises ranged from a fixed site 20 minutes from town to 200 km or no limit. Distance matters most on cloudy midwinter nights: our own guides drive on average about 40 km from town in September and March and about 120 km in December and January, into Sweden when the sky is clearer there.

Ask whether the route follows cloud models and live aurora data and can change during the night. A tour that always goes to the same place is a fixed-spot tour, whatever it is called. Ask where you stop, too: Visit Rovaniemi asks visitors never to stop or park on the side of a road to watch the lights.

How big is the group?

Small groups of up to 8 in a minivan move faster and give each guest more photo time, while large groups of up to about 50 on a coach cost far less.

In a large group more guests share one guide at each stop, and getting everyone back on board takes longer. In a minivan the guide can stop quickly and change plans on the spot. Neither is wrong: a large-group hunt with a real money-back rule is often better value than a small group that only offers a rebooking.

What exactly triggers the refund?

Read the trigger, not the word "guaranteed": the same word is used for a cash refund, a free second night, a voucher and no refund at all.

RuleWhat it promisesWhat to check
Photo-based money-backA full refund if the guide's camera does not capture the auroraWhether faint aurora on a long exposure counts. It usually does.
"Lights seen"A refund if the aurora was not seenWho decides what you saw. A pale glow behind thin cloud is easy to argue about.
Rebooking onlyA free place on another night, if there is spaceNo help if you fly out the next day.
Voucher or creditCredit for another activityIt does not give you your money back.
"We keep driving"The guide keeps hunting until the tour endsA service promise. If the sky stays cloudy, you still pay.
No guaranteeThe price covers the evening, whatever the sky doesNormal for snowmobile, reindeer and campfire evenings.

Our own rule is photo-based: if your guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights during the hunt, the tour is refunded in full, as real money, not a voucher. Like most photo-based rules, it counts what the camera captures, and a long exposure records faint aurora that looks pale grey to the eye. Our guide to how Northern Lights guarantees work explains the wording in detail.

How long is the tour, and is there a time limit?

Choose a tour that covers the hours around midnight, because that is when displays most often happen.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the typical time for auroral displays is around midnight and a couple of hours before and after. In autumn 2026 listings, campfire, reindeer and snowmobile evenings lasted about 2-5 hours, coach hunts 4-8 hours, and small-group and private hunts up to 12. A tour that is back at 22:00 is a sightseeing window, not a hunt.

Are photos included, and who takes them?

Most guaranteed hunts include free photos taken by the guide, but check how many, whether you are in them and whether anything is sold afterwards.

A good aurora portrait needs a proper camera on a tripod, so ask what equipment is used and whether videos are included. Bring your own camera or phone as well: our aurora photography tips explain the settings.

What about pickup, clothing and cancellation?

These three decide the real cost and how easy the evening is, so check them before you compare prices.

  • Pickup. Small-group and private tours usually collect you within a set distance of the centre, often 8-12 km. Coach tours usually start from a meeting point in town.
  • Clothing. Some tours include thermal overalls and boots; others do not. For one night, an included suit can save money; for several outdoor days, renting is better value. See our packing list for Northern Lights tours.
  • Cancellation. Many hunts are free to cancel up to 24 hours before, while activity evenings often need far more notice. Ask what happens if the operator cancels for weather or safety.

How much should a Northern Lights tour cost?

Expect roughly 45-140€ per person for a large-group hunt, 110-200€ in a small group and 700-1900€ per group for a private tour, with activity evenings at about 70-240€.

A higher price buys more hours, more distance and fewer guests, not a stronger aurora. In October many listings showed offers at about half the crossed-out normal price, so check your own date. Our guide to what a Northern Lights tour in Rovaniemi costs breaks down each price level and the extra costs to budget for.

Ten questions to ask any operator before you pay

Ask these in writing before you book; a good operator can answer each one in a sentence.

  1. Is this a hunt with no fixed route, or a trip to one site?
  2. What is the furthest you will drive, and will you cross into Sweden if the sky is clearer there?
  3. Who decides where we go, and on what data?
  4. How many guests travel with one guide, and in what vehicle?
  5. How long is the tour, and is there a time limit?
  6. What exactly triggers the refund: a photo, what we see, or nothing?
  7. Is the refund paid as money, or is it a rebooking or a voucher?
  8. Are photos included, how many, and are we in them?
  9. Where and when do you pick us up, and is warm clothing included?
  10. What is the cancellation rule, and what happens if you cancel for weather?

Which of our three tours fits you?

Our group tour suits a budget, the small-group tour suits couples and photographers who want the longest hunt, and the private tour suits families and groups who want their own guide; all three are hunts with the same refund rule.

When should you book a different tour?

Book another kind of tour if you want a fixed camp with dinner, a snowmobile or reindeer evening, winter clothing included or a short evening, because we do not sell any of those as aurora hunts.

  • A fixed camp or campfire dinner. Our hunts serve hot drinks, with snacks on two of them, not a meal. The nearest thing we offer is the private glass igloo sauna with a campfire BBQ, but it is not an aurora hunt and the guarantee does not cover it.
  • A snowmobile or reindeer aurora evening. We do not sell these as aurora hunts. If the ride is what you want, book an operator that does, and expect no refund if it is cloudy.
  • Winter clothing included. It is not provided on our Northern Lights tours. Our clothing rental costs 39€ for 1 day up to 129€ for 10 days, so for one night a tour with a thermal suit included can be cheaper.
  • A short evening or a short drive. Our hunts last at least 4 hours, most small-group nights end between midnight and 02:00, and on cloudy nights we may go 100 km or more from town. With young children or a dislike of long winter drives, a 2-3 hour fixed-site evening is the kinder choice.
  • Pickup at the lowest price. The 59€ group tour leaves from our office at Rovakatu 19 with no pickup.

Whichever tour you pick, every Polar Lapland aurora hunt comes with the 100% money-back Aurora Guarantee: no photo of you with the Northern Lights, full refund.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Northern Lights tour in Rovaniemi?

The one that drives to clear sky, covers the hours around midnight and states exactly what triggers a refund. After that, choose by budget and group: a large-group hunt for price, a small group for more photo time and a longer night, a private tour for families and groups of 5 to 8.

Is a small-group Northern Lights tour worth the extra money?

Often, if you are a couple or a photographer: up to 8 guests per guide means quicker stops, more photo time and usually a longer hunt. On a budget, a large-group hunt with a money-back rule is better value than a small group that only offers a rebooking.

Are guaranteed Northern Lights tours really guaranteed?

No one can guarantee the aurora. A tour can only guarantee your money or a second try, so read the trigger: a refund if the guide's camera captures no aurora, a refund if you did not see it, a free second night, a voucher, or nothing. On our three aurora tours, if your guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights during the hunt, the tour is refunded in full.

Is a snowmobile or reindeer Northern Lights tour a good idea?

Yes, if you want the ride itself. These evenings stay in one area and usually do not refund you if it is cloudy, so treat the aurora as a bonus. If the aurora is the goal, book a hunt that drives to clear sky.

How far in advance should I book a Northern Lights tour?

Book ahead for Christmas, February and March, when tours can sell out on clear nights. At other times there is usually more choice closer to the date. Either way, book an early night of your stay, so a cloudy night leaves time for another try.
