What December is actually like
The sun clears the horizon for barely two hours around the winter solstice, but the day is not black. Civil twilight adds several hours of soft blue and pink light on either side of noon, which is when the snow-covered forests look their best. By about 15:00 it is dark enough for the first faint aurora, and by 17:00 the sky is fully dark. Christmas and New Year: plan for crowds
The two weeks around Christmas are the busiest of the entire year in Rovaniemi. Flights, apartments and tour slots sell out months ahead and prices peak.
