How Much Does a Northern Lights Tour in Rovaniemi Cost? (2026-27 Season)
What Northern Lights tours from Rovaniemi cost in the 2026-27 season: typical prices by tour type on the big booking platforms, what the money buys, the extras to budget for and our own prices.
Short answer: in the 2026-27 season, a Northern Lights tour from Rovaniemi typically costs 45-140€ per person on a large-group coach hunt, 110-200€ in a small group of up to 8, 70-240€ for a snowmobile, reindeer or campfire evening, and 700-1900€ per group for a private tour. Our own aurora tours cost 59€ and 149€ per person, or 1800€ per private group.
These are typical prices on the big booking platforms and Visit Rovaniemi in autumn 2026. They change with season and demand: in October many listings showed offers at about half the crossed-out normal price, so check your date.
Typical prices by tour type
The type of tour decides most of the price: a seat on a coach costs the least, a guide and vehicle for your group alone costs the most.
| Tour type | Typical price per person | Group size | Duration | What is usually included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large-group coach hunt | 45-140€ | Up to about 50 | 4-8 hours | Heated coach, hot drinks, photos on most, meeting point in town; often a money-back guarantee |
| Small-group minivan hunt | 110-200€ | Usually up to 8 | 4-12 hours | Pickup from your accommodation, photos, hot drinks and snacks; often a guarantee |
| Photography tour | 110-190€ | Usually up to 8 | 3-8 hours | A photographer guide, help with your camera, photos of you |
| Snowmobile aurora safari | 120-240€ | Small groups, often two per snowmobile | 2.5-5 hours | Snowmobile, guide, campfire break |
| Reindeer sleigh evening | 75-200€ | Small groups | 2-4.5 hours | Sleigh ride, fire or warm hut, hot drink |
| Aurora camp or campfire dinner | 70-130€ (to about 240€ with dinner and a sled or train ride) | Small to medium groups | 2.5-4.5 hours | Transfer to a fixed site, campfire food, hot drinks |
| Private tour | 700-1900€ per group | Your group only, often up to 6 or 8 | 4 hours to no time limit | Private pickup, own guide and vehicle, photos; a guarantee on some |
A "from" price is usually the cheapest option, often the coach seat. Private tours vary most: 700€ to 1850€ per group, for 4 hours to no time limit, with a refund, a second attempt or no guarantee. Snowmobile, reindeer and campfire evenings sell the activity itself, and most do not refund you if the sky stays cloudy.
What you pay for
You pay mainly for time, distance and attention: how long the guide keeps looking, how far the vehicle drives away from cloud, and how many guests share one guide.
- Group size. A coach carries up to about 50 guests, a minivan usually 8. Fewer guests means quicker stops and more photo time each.
- Hours. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, auroral displays typically happen around midnight and a couple of hours before and after, so a tour that is back by 22:00 can miss the best window.
- Distance. Listings promise anything from a fixed site 20 minutes away to 200 km or no limit. On cloudy nights, distance finds clear sky. Our small-group tour drives up to 350 km if needed.
- Photos, food and clothing. Most guaranteed hunts include free photos and serve hot drinks and snacks, not a meal. Some include thermal overalls and boots; others, including ours, do not.
- Pickup. Small-group and private tours usually collect you within a set distance of the centre, often 8-12 km. Coach tours start from a meeting point in town.
The guarantee is the biggest difference the price does not show. In autumn 2026 listings we found four policies:
- Money-back: if the guide's camera does not capture the aurora during the tour, the price is refunded.
- Free second attempt: a place on another night's hunt, if there is space; some refund only if no second night is possible during your stay.
- Your choice: another night or the refund.
- No guarantee: the price covers the evening, whatever the sky does.
A second attempt helps only if you have another free evening. Most guarantees, ours included, count aurora captured by the guide's camera, and a long exposure records faint aurora that looks pale grey to the eye.

Two of our evenings let you watch the sky but are not hunts and carry no guarantee: the Arctic Spa Experience (129€ with pickup, 89€ without, 2.5-3 hours, ages 14 and over), timed for the best aurora hours, and the private glass igloo sauna with jacuzzi and BBQ (169€ per adult, 129€ per child aged 3-11, 4 hours) at a dark forest site. You see the lights only if the sky is clear and the aurora is active.
Hidden costs to check before you book
The ticket is rarely the whole cost: check clothing, children's prices, pickup, photos and cancellation before you compare tours.
- Warm clothing. Winter clothing is not provided on our Northern Lights tours. Our winter clothing set rental costs 39€ for 1 day, 67€ for 3 days or 99€ for 7 days. For one night, a tour that includes overalls can be cheaper; for several outdoor days, rental is better value. See our packing list for Northern Lights tours.
- Children's prices. Rules vary. On our group tour everyone aged 4 and over pays 59€; the small-group tour charges from 139€ for ages 4-12; the spa is for ages 14 and over.
- Pickup distance. If you stay outside the pickup area, add the cost and time of reaching the meeting point, or ask whether pickup is possible.
- Photo fees. Check whether photos are included or sold afterwards. On our three aurora tours they are included.
- Cancellation. Our aurora tours are free to cancel up to 24 hours before, like many platform listings. Our spa and igloo evenings are free to cancel only more than 30 days before.
Is a more expensive tour worth it?
A more expensive tour buys more hours, more distance and fewer people, not a stronger aurora, so the answer depends on how many nights you have and who you travel with.
| You are | Best value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On a budget or solo | Group tour | 59€ with the full guarantee. Two nights cost 118€, less than one small-group night. |
| A couple | Small-group tour | Pickup at your door, max 8 guests, up to 12 hours. |
| A photographer | Small-group tour | The longest hunt, with unlimited photos and videos. Read our aurora photography tips too. |
| A family | Group or private tour | A family of four pays 236€ on the group tour; the private tour lets you decide when to go home. |
| A group of 5-8 | Private tour | 1800€ is 225€ each for 8 guests, 300€ for 6 and 360€ for 5: more than 149€, but the guide, vehicle and plan are yours. |
If your dates are flexible, the best month for the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi matters more for your odds than the tour price. To add husky, reindeer or snowmobile days, build your trip and get one plan with one price.
Can you see the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi without a tour?
Yes: on a clear night with active aurora you can see the Northern Lights for free, but you need a dark place with a view north and, on cloudy nights, a car to reach clear sky.
According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, auroras appear on roughly 50% of dark, cloudless nights at the Lapland ski resorts north of Rovaniemi, such as Levi and Ylläs. In town, the riverbank behind the Arktikum museum and the top of Ounasvaara hill work on strong nights: see the best places to see the Northern Lights near Rovaniemi and check cloud and Kp on our live aurora data page. A tour adds the vehicle, the winter driving and, on ours, a refund if the hunt fails.
Whichever tour you pick, every Polar Lapland aurora hunt comes with the 100% money-back Aurora Guarantee: no photo of you with the Northern Lights, full refund.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Northern Lights tour in Rovaniemi?
In the 2026-27 season, typical prices on the big booking platforms are 45-140€ per person for a large-group coach hunt, 110-200€ for a small-group hunt and 700-1900€ per group for a private tour. Snowmobile, reindeer and campfire evenings cost about 70-240€. Polar Lapland charges 59€ and 149€ per person, or 1800€ per private group.
Are Northern Lights tours in Rovaniemi worth it?
For most visitors, yes. Cloud is the main obstacle, and a guide with a vehicle can drive to clear sky, often 100 km or more away, which is hard to do alone in winter. A money-back guarantee also removes most of the financial risk.
What is the cheapest way to see the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi?
Free: on a clear night with strong aurora, walk to the riverbank behind the Arktikum museum or the top of Ounasvaara hill. The cheapest guided option is a large-group coach hunt, from about 45€ per person on autumn offers. Our group tour costs 59€ with the Aurora Guarantee.
Do Northern Lights tours give refunds if you don't see them?
Some do. Listings offer a full refund if the guide's camera captures no aurora, a free place on another night, a choice between the two, or no guarantee at all. On Polar Lapland's three aurora tours, if your guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights during the hunt, the tour is refunded in full.
How long is a Northern Lights tour?
Between about 2 and 12 hours. Campfire, reindeer and snowmobile evenings usually last 2-5 hours, coach hunts 4-8 hours, and small-group and private hunts up to 12 hours. Our group tour lasts 4-6 hours, and our small-group and private tours 4-12 hours.
Should I book in advance or on the day?
Book in advance for Christmas and for February and March: tours run every night in season and can sell out on clear nights. At other times there is usually more choice closer to the date. Book an early night of your stay, so a cloudy night leaves time for another try.
