Where to Stay in Rovaniemi for the Northern Lights

The best areas to stay in Rovaniemi for a Northern Lights trip: city centre, Ounasvaara, the Arctic Circle and countryside cabins compared, plus apartments with a private sauna that work with our tour pickups.

Willa Lumia, a villa near Rovaniemi with a private sauna, in winter

Short answer: for a Northern Lights trip, stay in or near the centre of Rovaniemi and let a guided hunt take you to the dark sky. The centre is where the tours pick up, where the restaurants are, and where you can walk to everything. If you want to see the aurora from your own doorstep, book a cabin 20-40 minutes out of town and rent a car, but keep at least one guided hunt in the plan, because the lights are rarely overhead exactly where you sleep.

First, how the tours pick you up

Our group aurora tour departs from our office at Rovakatu 19 in the centre. The small-group and private aurora tours, the reindeer farm visit and the day trips include hotel pickup in central Rovaniemi. The glass igloo sauna picks up from hotels within 10 km of the centre. Staying centrally therefore keeps every tour simple; staying far out means driving in for the evening departure.

City centre. Compact, walkable, and the departure point for everything. Apartments here have kitchens, saunas and washing machines, which matters on a week-long winter trip with wet gloves. You will not see much aurora from a central window, and that is fine: the tour takes you where it is dark.

Ounasvaara. The forested hill across the river with Rovaniemi's ski slopes and winter trails. Quiet, close, and with darker skies on the side facing away from the city. A good compromise if you want nature within five minutes of the centre.

The Arctic Circle. Santa Claus Village and the glass igloo resorts sit 8 km north of the centre. Ideal for a Christmas trip with children; expect resort prices and some light from the village itself. Pickups for our tours from this area are arranged on request.

Countryside cabins. Lakeside and forest houses 20-40 minutes out of town, often with a wood-fired sauna and a clear view north. On an active night you can watch the aurora from the terrace. You need a car, and you should still book a guided hunt, which finds the lights when the sky over your cabin is cloudy.

Apartment or hotel?

Rovaniemi has good hotels, but for winter trips of three nights or more we recommend an apartment or house: a kitchen for cheap breakfasts before an early tour, a private sauna to warm up after a night in the cold, a washing machine, and, for groups, far more space per euro. We manage 90 apartments, houses and villas in Rovaniemi, 53 of them with a sauna, from studios for two to a lodge for ten. Each can be bundled with tours and pickups through our trip builder.

  • Koru, Finnish Design Suite: a one-bedroom apartment for up to four in the city, with its own sauna and a lift. Walk to the group-tour departure.
  • Northern City Studio: a central studio for two with free parking, ideal for a short first aurora trip.
  • Willa Lumia: a three-bedroom villa for up to nine with a private sauna, fireplace and heated skylights above the beds, so you can watch the sky from under the duvet.
  • Arctic Wilderness Lodge: a four-bedroom house for up to ten about 30 minutes from town, with sauna, fireplace and a dark sky for groups who want the doorstep aurora.

Booking tips for a Northern Lights stay

  • Book the aurora hunt for your first night. If the lights hide, you have more nights, and our guarantee refunds the tour anyway.
  • Christmas and late February go first. Read the December and February guides before fixing dates; January and early March are quieter and just as good for the sky.
  • Ask about pickup before booking a cabin. Send us the address and we will tell you whether our tours can collect you or where to meet.
  • Sauna first, aurora second. Tours return late; a sauna at midnight in your own apartment is the best way to end an aurora night.

Whichever tour you pick, every Polar Lapland aurora hunt comes with the 100% money-back Aurora Guarantee: no photo of you with the Northern Lights, no payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best area to stay in Rovaniemi for the Northern Lights?

The city centre, because every tour departs from or picks up there and the guided hunt takes you to dark sky. If you want to see the aurora from your accommodation, choose a cabin 20-40 minutes out of town with a clear northern horizon, and rent a car.

Can you see the Northern Lights from Rovaniemi city centre?

Only during strong displays. Street lighting hides faint aurora, and midwinter cloud often covers the town while it is clear 50 km away. That is why our tours drive to the clearest sky each night instead of waiting in town.

Do your Northern Lights tours pick up from hotels?

The small-group and private aurora tours include pickup from accommodation in central Rovaniemi. The group tour departs from our office at Rovakatu 19, 96200 Rovaniemi. Pickups from the Arctic Circle area and cabins outside town are arranged on request.

Is it better to stay in an apartment or a hotel in Rovaniemi in winter?

For three nights or more, an apartment or house: a kitchen, a private sauna, a washing machine and more space per euro. We manage 90 apartments, houses and villas in Rovaniemi, 53 of them with a sauna, and can bundle any of them with tours.

How far in advance should I book accommodation in Rovaniemi?

For Christmas and New Year, six months or more. For late February and early March school holidays, three to four months. For January and mid-March a few weeks is usually enough, though the best apartments with saunas go first.
