Free and low-cost things to do in Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi's best free sights are the Arctic Circle at Santa Claus Village, the riverside, the post-war town centre and Ounasvaara hill just across the river.
- Cross the Arctic Circle at Santa Claus Village. The village stands on the Arctic Circle about 8 km north of the centre, on the local bus route to the airport. Visit Rovaniemi says it is open every day of the year with no entrance fee, and that meeting Santa Claus is free; the official photo, the certificate and the rides cost extra. See our honest Santa Claus Village guide.
- Walk the riverside to the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge. The centre sits where the Ounasjoki river flows into the Kemijoki. Walk the bank from the Arktikum museum towards Jätkänkynttilä, the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge of 1989, whose lit pylon tops imitate a lumberjack's split-log fire. On a strong aurora night, the dark riverbank behind Arktikum is one of two places in town where the lights show well.
- Climb Ounasvaara hill. Visit Rovaniemi describes a winter walking trail of about 6 km on Ounasvaara, groomed for walkers and starting 1.6 km east of the centre across the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge, with an observation tower that looks over the city and the Kemijoki. Allow about two hours and wear boots with a good grip.
- Ski the cross-country trails. According to the Santasport sports centre, Rovaniemi has about 200 km of maintained ski trails, about 100 km of them on Ounasvaara. Beginners should keep to the flatter trails.
- See how the town was rebuilt after 1944. Retreating German troops destroyed about 90% of the town's buildings in 1944. Rovaniemi Church, completed in 1950, has Lennart Segerstråle's 1951 altar fresco, Source of Life; check its short weekday opening hours. Nearby, Alvar Aalto's City Library (1965), Lappia Hall (1975) and City Hall (1986) form the Aalto Centre, and his office drew the 1945 reindeer antler town plan.
Which guided Arctic activities are worth booking?
Huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles and ice fishing all run in the snow season, with pickup or a meeting point in the centre. Compare them on our winter activities page.

- Try ice fishing on a frozen lake. The snowmobile and ice fishing experience (169€ sharing a snowmobile, 219€ solo, children 3-11 139€, 4-5 hours) rides about an hour to a frozen forest lake, drills the ice and ends with grilled salmon by the campfire, whether you catch anything or not.
What are the best day trips from Rovaniemi in winter?
The two best winter day trips from Rovaniemi are the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma and the snow-crowned forest of Riisitunturi National Park; both bring you back in time for an aurora hunt.
- Hike to the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma. Korouoma is a canyon about 110 km south-east of Rovaniemi whose ice falls form in late November and stay solid until early April. Our Korouoma day trip (139€, children 109€, about 7 hours from 09:00) includes a moderate 4-6 km guided hike with crampons and poles and a wilderness BBQ. See our Korouoma guide.
- Walk among the tykky trees of Riisitunturi. Riisitunturi National Park is famous for tykky, spruces bent into strange shapes under heavy crown snow, at its best from December to March. Our Riisitunturi tour (189€, children 3-11 179€, 7-8 hours) is easy walking with lunch, hot drinks and snowshoes when the snow is deep. Bring sunglasses in February and March.
- Visit Ranua Wildlife Park. Ranua is about 80 km from Rovaniemi, around an hour by road, according to Visit Rovaniemi. Its wildlife park keeps about 50 Arctic species, including polar bears, wolves and lynx, and opens every day of the year. We do not run tours there, so drive or book a transfer, and dress warmly for a slow outdoor walk.
Evenings: the Northern Lights and saunas
Winter evenings in Rovaniemi belong to the aurora and the sauna. Mid-December has about 13 hours of full darkness, and mid-February still has about 10.
- Hunt the Northern Lights. Our Northern Lights tours from Rovaniemi follow live cloud and solar-wind data to the clearest sky. The group tour (59€, was 109€) leaves Rovakatu 19 at 19:30 or 20:00 for 4-6 hours. The small-group tour (149€, was 199€) picks you up around 18:00, with at most 8 guests per guide, for 4-12 hours and up to 350 km. The private tour is 1800€ for 1-8 guests. All include professional photos and hot drinks, and if the guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights during the hunt, the tour is refunded in full. Clothing is not provided: read what to wear for a Northern Lights tour or rent a winter clothing set from 39€ a day. On your own? See the best places to see the Northern Lights near Rovaniemi.
- Book a private glass igloo sauna. The glass igloo sauna evening (169€, children 3-11 129€, 4 hours, starting between 16:00 and 21:30) is for your group only: about an hour of wood-fired sauna and jacuzzi, a dip in the icy lake or a roll in the snow, and a campfire BBQ. The minimum is 2 guests, or 4 on Sundays and public holidays; swimwear rental is 15€. The aurora may appear, but the Aurora Guarantee does not apply.
- Spend an evening at an Arctic spa. The Arctic Spa Experience (129€ with pickup, 89€ without, 2.5-3 hours) gives you about 1.5 hours of hot spring, Finnish sauna, steam room, salt bath and outdoor jacuzzi at Aito Igloo & Spa Resort on Lake Palojärvi, starting between about 18:00 and 21:00. Guests must be 14 or older, with at least 4 people per tour.
- Try sauna and ice swimming, the Finnish way. Visit Rovaniemi calls the sauna part of the Finnish way of living, and in winter several saunas around town, including riverside saunas on the Kemijoki near Ounasvaara, keep an ice hole open. Swim only at a maintained hole with other people around, for a few seconds at a time, then go back into the heat.
What to do in Rovaniemi with children
With children, keep each activity short and plan warm breaks. Santa Claus Village, the reindeer farms, Ranua Wildlife Park and a sleigh ride behind a snowmobile are the usual favourites.
- Take the family snowmobile safari. On the family snowmobile safari (3 hours, groups of at most 8, pickup within 15 km of the centre), children under 140 cm ride in a heated sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile. Adults pay 115€ sharing a snowmobile or 155€ solo, and children aged 3-12 pay 84€. Drivers must be 18 or older and bring a physical car driving licence.
- Ski downhill at Ounasvaara. Ounasvaara Ski Resort, on the hill across the river from the centre, has ten slopes, the longest 600 m, according to Visit Rovaniemi, and is open from November to April.
Small children can also ride in the husky sled with two adults, and the Arctic spa is for ages 14 and over.
What to do in Rovaniemi when it is very cold or cloudy
On a −25 °C day or under thick cloud, spend the daylight hours indoors and let a guide find the clear sky at night.
- Visit Arktikum, the Arctic science centre and museum. Arktikum, at Pohjoisranta 4, is a science centre and museum in one, with exhibitions by the University of Lapland's Arctic Centre and the Regional Museum of Lapland on Arctic nature, history and people. Allow two to three hours; one Culture Pass ticket covers Arktikum and Korundi. The nearby Pilke science centre, still listed in many guides, closed for good on 2 October 2026.
- See art or a concert at Korundi. Korundi House of Culture holds the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the home hall of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, in a 1933 mail-truck depot that is one of the few buildings in Rovaniemi to survive the Second World War. Check the programme on its site before you go.
Cloud over town does not mean cloud everywhere: on cloudy nights, most common from November to January, our guides often drive 100 km or more, sometimes into Sweden, to find clear sky.
