3 Days in Rovaniemi in Winter: A Northern Lights Itinerary
A day-by-day 3-day Rovaniemi winter itinerary from local guides: Santa Claus Village and a first aurora hunt, huskies and a glass igloo sauna, a frozen-waterfall day trip and a second night under the lights, with real times and prices.
Short answer: three days is enough for Rovaniemi if you plan the nights first. Book an aurora hunt for your first evening, keep a second night for another hunt, and fill the days with one big activity each: Santa Claus Village on arrival day, huskies on day two, a frozen-waterfall or national-park day trip on day three. Everything below runs from the city centre with pickups or a short walk, so you do not need a car.
Before you go: three decisions
- Pick your month. December for Christmas, February and March for the clearest skies and deepest snow, January for quiet and cold. The best-month guide compares them.
- Book the aurora night first. Aurora tours sell out before daytime tours, and the first-night rule matters: if the lights hide, you have two more nights and the guarantee refunds the tour anyway.
- Stay central. Every tour below departs from or picks up in central Rovaniemi. See where to stay.
Day 1: arrive, Santa Claus Village, first aurora hunt
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Rovaniemi airport to the centre | About 10 km; taxis and the airport bus meet flights. Drop bags, buy warm layers if you forgot any. |
| Afternoon | Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle | 8 km north of the centre by local bus or taxi. Cross the Arctic Circle line, meet Santa, see the reindeer. Our visitor guide explains what is free and what is not. |
| Early evening | Dinner in the centre | Eat early: aurora hunts leave between 19:00 and 21:00. |
| Evening to late night | Guaranteed Northern Lights group tour | 4-6 hours from Rovakatu 19, professional photos, hot drinks, 99€. Or the small-group tour with pickup, 4-12 hours, 169€. |
Day 2: huskies, then a glass igloo sauna
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | Arctic husky safari, 5 km self-drive | Meet at Korkalonkatu 36 (no pickup for this tour). Thermal clothing provided, six sleds per group, warm break in a kota, about 5 hours, 179€. |
| 14:00 | Lunch and a slow afternoon | Walk the riverbank, visit the Arktikum museum, or sleep off the night before. |
| 16:00 to 21:30 (4 hours) | Private glass igloo sauna, jacuzzi and campfire BBQ | Pickup from hotels within 10 km of the centre, sauna and jacuzzi for about an hour, lake dip, sausages by the fire, 169€ (children 129€). If the sky is clear you may see the aurora from the forest. |
Family variant: swap the husky safari for the reindeer farm visit and sleigh ride (about 3 hours with pickup, 109€) in the morning and the one-hour snowmobile tour (115€, drivers need a car licence) after lunch.
Day 3: a frozen wilderness day trip, then a second night under the lights
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | Korouoma Canyon frozen waterfalls hike and BBQ | Pickup in Rovaniemi, 4-6 km guided hike past the ice falls, wilderness BBQ, back in the late afternoon, 139€. Moderate walking; crampons provided. |
| Alternative | Riisitunturi National Park | Departure 08:00-09:00, 7-8 hours, easy walking among the snow-crowned trees, lunch included, 199€. |
| Evening | Second aurora hunt, or a free evening | If night one delivered, enjoy dinner and a sauna. If it did not, the small-group tour picks you up at your accommodation and hunts for up to 12 hours. |

Whichever tour you pick, every Polar Lapland aurora hunt comes with the 100% money-back Aurora Guarantee: no photo of you with the Northern Lights, no payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3 days enough for Rovaniemi in winter?
Yes, if you book the aurora hunt for the first night and plan one main activity per day: Santa Claus Village on arrival, huskies on day two, a frozen-waterfall or national-park day trip on day three, with a second aurora night in reserve.
How many Northern Lights tours should I book in 3 days?
Two, on separate nights. The lights and the cloud change every night; two hunts in different conditions give a very high combined chance, and each hunt is refunded if we cannot photograph you with the aurora.
Do I need a car for this itinerary?
No. All the tours depart from the city centre or include pickup, and Santa Claus Village is on the local bus route. A car only helps if you stay in a cabin outside town.
Can I do a husky safari and a Northern Lights tour on the same day?
Yes. The husky safari runs in the morning and early afternoon, and aurora hunts leave in the evening. Plan a rest in between: the hunt can run past midnight.
How much does 3 days of tours in Rovaniemi cost?
Between about 268€ per adult for two aurora hunts only and about 755€ for the full adventure plan with huskies, the igloo sauna, Korouoma and two aurora nights, at our published tour prices.
