What Can You Do in Rovaniemi in 2 Days? A Winter Weekend Plan
A 2-day Rovaniemi winter plan from local guides: decide the nights first, book an aurora hunt for night one and one big daytime activity, and keep night two as a spare hunt, with real times, prices and a 24-hour version.
Short answer: in two winter days, book an aurora hunt for your first night, one big daytime activity such as huskies or reindeer for day two, and keep your second night as a spare hunt in case the first one is cloudy. Fit Santa Claus Village into the afternoon you arrive. Everything below starts in central Rovaniemi, with pickups, a short walk or local bus 8, so you do not need a car.
This plan squeezes the logic of our 3-day Rovaniemi winter itinerary into a weekend. It works from November to mid-April, when our snow activities (November to April) and our aurora tours (late August to mid-April) overlap.
Why decide the nights first?
Because the Northern Lights need darkness and a clear sky on the same night, the number of evenings you spend in Rovaniemi shapes the plan more than the number of days.
According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, auroral displays typically happen around midnight and a couple of hours before and after, and its odds for Lapland assume a clear sky. Cloud is the usual spoiler, which is why our guides compare cloud models with live solar-wind and aurora data and drive to the clearest sky, across the border into Sweden when needed. Count your nights, then plan:
| Your weekend | How to use the nights |
|---|---|
| Two nights, for example Friday and Saturday | Aurora hunt on night one; night two is the spare hunt or a free evening |
| One night only | One hunt, ideally the small-group tour, which can run up to 12 hours (see the 24-hour plan below) |
| You land in the evening | Hunt on night one only if your flight leaves time for the small-group pickup around 18:00 or the group tour at 19:30 or 20:00; otherwise hunt on night two and accept that you have no spare night |
Day 1: arrive, Santa Claus Village, first aurora hunt
Spend the afternoon you arrive at Santa Claus Village, eat early in the centre, then go out on your first aurora hunt.
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Airport to the centre | Rovaniemi airport is about 10 km from the city centre. In winter the Airport Express and Santa's Express bus stops at the railway station and Santa Claus Village, and taxis wait in front of the terminal at arrival times. |
| Afternoon, 2-3 hours | Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle | 8 km north of the centre, by local bus 8, which runs all year, or by taxi. Entry is free and so is meeting Santa. You may not take your own photos during the meeting; the official ones are optional to buy. |
| By 18:30 | Collect rental clothing, if you need it | Winterent Brand Store, Jaakonkatu 3: you choose a pickup time between 09:30 and 18:30 when you book, or book delivery to your accommodation. |
| Early evening | Dinner in the centre | Eat early: the small-group tour picks you up around 18:00. |
| Evening to late night | First aurora hunt | The group Northern Lights tour: 59€, 4-6 hours, from our office at Rovakatu 19 at 19:30 or 20:00, with professional photos and hot drinks. Or the small-group Northern Lights tour: 149€, pickup around 18:00, max 8 guests per guide, 4-12 hours, most nights back between midnight and 02:00. |
Santa Claus Village is open every day of the year, but its companies set their own opening hours and keep longer hours in the Christmas season, so check the hours for your dates on the official site. December is the busiest month, and Santa Claus Office recommends arriving in the morning to secure your place in the queue. If you land in the afternoon in December, consider moving the Village to the morning of day two and your activity to the afternoon.
Daylight is short in midwinter: in mid-December the sun is up only from about 10:58 to 13:26, and the Village is lit after dark. Check the last bus 8 back to town on the Linkkari timetable before you go, because it leaves in the early evening. Our honest Santa Claus Village guide covers queues, costs and the mistakes visitors make.
Day 2: one big activity, a slow afternoon, the spare night
Book one big daytime activity with a late-morning start, rest in the afternoon, and keep the evening for a second hunt in case night one was cloudy.
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Late morning | One big activity | Pick one: the 10 km husky safari at 11:00 (209€, about 5 hours, pickup included), the 5 km husky safari departing between 09:00 and 14:00 (179€, meet at Korkalonkatu 36), the reindeer farm visit with a long sleigh ride at 09:45 (169€, about 3.5 hours) or the 1-hour snowmobile tour (115€ twin driving, about 3.5 hours, drivers 18+ with a car licence). |
| Afternoon | Rest | Walk the riverbank, visit the Arktikum museum or sleep off the night before. |
| Evening | Spare hunt or a free evening | See the rule of the spare night below. |
The late start matters: if night one ran until 01:00 or 02:00, an 08:30 departure is hard work. All four of these tours include winter clothing (on the snowmobile tour, wear your own winter boots).
With young children: choose the Reindeer Farm & Ride (109€, children aged 3-12 89€, about 3 hours with hotel pickup) or the Family Snowmobile Safari (115€, children 84€, a heated sleigh for children under 140 cm). On the group aurora tour, everyone aged 4 and over pays the same 59€. Not sure which day tour suits you? Read husky, reindeer or snowmobile: which to pick.
If night one gave you the photo: the evening is yours. Stay in town, or book ahead for the Arctic Spa Experience (129€ with pickup, 2.5-3 hours, ages 14 and over, minimum 4 guests, evenings between about 18:00 and 21:00) or the private glass igloo sauna with jacuzzi and BBQ (169€, children 129€, 4 hours, starting between 16:00 and 21:30). Both are timed for the aurora hours, but they are not hunts and carry no guarantee. Both are free to cancel only more than 30 days before, so they cannot be a last-minute swap.
What is the rule of the spare night?
Never make your last night your only aurora night: hunt on night one and treat night two as the backup.
- Night one works: you have your photo, and night two is free for dinner, a sauna or a second hunt under a different sky.
- Night one is cloudy or quiet: if your guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights during the hunt, that tour is refunded in full, and you still have night two.
- Decide early how you book night two. Our aurora tours are free to cancel up to 24 hours before departure, which on a weekend is before your first hunt has even started. So either book both nights in advance and go out twice whatever happens, or check the booking calendar on the morning of day two and book if places are left.
Around Christmas and in February and March, book both nights ahead: tours run every night in season and can sell out on clear nights. The group tour makes the cheaper spare: two nights cost 118€, less than one small-group night.
What if you only have 24 hours?
Spend your one night on the longest aurora hunt you can, and keep the day light: Santa Claus Village or one short tour, not a 5-hour safari before a late night.
24 hours only: land, drop your bags and collect rental clothing if you need it. Spend 2-3 hours at Santa Claus Village, or take the Reindeer Farm & Ride (about 3 hours with hotel pickup) if reindeer matter more to you than Santa and a departure fits your arrival. Eat early. Book the small-group aurora tour for your one night: it picks you up around 18:00 and can hunt for up to 12 hours and 350 km, which gives a single night the most time and distance. If your flight lands in the evening, the 20:00 group tour from Rovakatu 19 leaves the most margin; message us before booking if the timing is tight. Either way, if your guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights, the tour is refunded in full.
One honest warning: a single night is a gamble on the weather. The guarantee protects your money, not your sighting, so if your dates allow it, a second night is worth more than any extra activity.
What does a 2-day winter trip cost?
At our published prices, the tours for a 2-day weekend cost from 168€ per adult for a group aurora hunt and a reindeer farm visit to 318€ for the small-group hunt and the long sleigh ride, before flights, accommodation and meals.
| Plan | What you book | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Simple weekend | Group aurora tour 59€ + Reindeer Farm & Ride 109€ | 168€ per adult |
| Husky weekend | Group aurora tour 59€ + 10 km husky safari 209€ | 268€ per adult |
| Small-group weekend | Small-group aurora tour 149€ + long sleigh ride 169€ | 318€ per adult |
| Family of four, two children aged 4-12 | Group aurora tour 4 × 59€ + Reindeer Farm & Ride 2 × 109€ + 2 × 89€ | 632€ in total |
| Add the spare hunt | Group tour or small-group tour on night two | +59€ or +149€ per adult |
| Add warm clothing | Winter clothing set rental for 2 days | +54€ per set |
Santa Claus Village costs nothing to enter and meeting Santa is free; the official photos, food and souvenirs are extra. To bundle several tours into one plan, build your trip and a local guide replies with one plan and one price; nothing is booked until you confirm. What should you wear, and can you rent it?
Wear three warm layers and rent the outer layer if you do not own Arctic gear: our winter clothing set costs 39€ for 1 day or 54€ for 2 days.
- Layers: a merino or synthetic base layer, a fleece or wool mid layer and a windproof insulated outer layer, plus wool socks, winter boots rated to around −30 °C, a warm hat, a neck gaiter and mittens.
- What the tours provide: the husky safaris, the long reindeer ride and the snowmobile tours include winter clothing; the Northern Lights tours and the Reindeer Farm & Ride do not. On a hunt you are outside at every stop, but you can go back to the heated van at any time.
- The rental set: a warm jacket, trousers, snow mittens, snow boots and a tube scarf, in adult sizes up to 6XL; the kids' set (80-134 cm) has a very warm overall instead, at the same price. Wear your own base and mid layers, wool socks and a beanie under it.
- Collection: at the Winterent Brand Store, Jaakonkatu 3, between 09:30 and 18:30, or book delivery to your accommodation as an extra.
At Santa Claus Village the paths get icy, so wear boots with grip. Book the winter clothing set rental and see our packing list for Lapland.
Whichever tour you pick, every Polar Lapland aurora hunt comes with the 100% money-back Aurora Guarantee: no photo of you with the Northern Lights, full refund.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2 days enough for Rovaniemi in winter?
Yes, for the highlights, if you have two nights: an aurora hunt on night one, Santa Claus Village and one big activity by day, and night two kept as a spare hunt. With a third day you can add a frozen-waterfall or national-park day trip.
How many Northern Lights tours should I book in 2 days?
One, on your first night, with your second night kept as a spare. If your guide cannot photograph you with the Northern Lights, the first tour is refunded in full and you can try again on night two.
Can I visit Santa Claus Village and do a Northern Lights tour on the same day?
Yes. The Village is a daytime visit of 2-3 hours, 8 km north of the centre, and the hunts start in the evening: the small-group tour picks you up around 18:00 and the group tour leaves Rovakatu 19 at 19:30 or 20:00.
Do I need a car for a weekend in Rovaniemi?
No. The airport is about 10 km from the centre, with buses and taxis, local bus 8 runs all year to Santa Claus Village, and our tours either include pickup or start in the centre: the group aurora tour from our office at Rovakatu 19 and the 5 km husky safari at Korkalonkatu 36.
How much does a weekend in Rovaniemi cost?
At our prices, tours cost from 168€ per adult for a group aurora tour and a reindeer farm visit to 318€ for the small-group hunt and the long sleigh ride. Add 59€ or 149€ for a spare hunt and 54€ for 2 days of clothing rental. Flights, accommodation and meals are extra.
